Psychological Support Service

County Dublin VEC Psychological Support Service (PSS) was established in 1992 to address the special needs of schools and centres in the scheme. The Service is available to all staff and to students in the VEC’s second level, Youthreach and VTOS provision. The model adopted by the Service incorporates a multi-disciplinary, consultative, team-based approach. Interventions by the team are directed towards:

  • the resolution of behavioural, motivational, emotional and cognitive difficulties of individual persons, through assessment and therapeutic intervention
  • preventative work with target groups
  • professional support of teaching staff, in relation to individuals referred and to other professional issues
  • personal support of teaching staff in relation to school or centre issues
  • support of parents, in relation to individually referred young persons and to other school or centre-related issues
  • the professional placement of Intern or Trainee Psychologists.

The service may employ models of intervention which include behavioural, clinical, counselling, educational, forensic, health, organisational or psychotherapeutic expertise as appropriate. The service also facilitates the referral of parents to other services appropriate to their needs. In the case of young persons over 18, the involvement of parents is at the discretion of the young person.

The service is free and confidential.
