Adult Refugee Programme
Fingal and South Dublin Education Services
Currently there are students from Russia, Moldova, Ivory Coast, The Congo, Nigeria, Iraq, Somalia, Angola, Eritrea, Algeria and Libya partaking in the ARP programmes at Fingal and South Dublin VECs.
Classes are held in the morning and afternoon and we try to accommodate all levels. It should be noted that to qualify for the ARP, students must possess a valid Stamp 4.
Our programme of study focuses on FETAC Language modules levels three, four and five, with an emphasis on study and work skills, computer literacy and progression through the education system. We acknowledge that many of our students have qualifications from their native countries. Our students are highly motivated and engage in activities ranging from career guidance and project work to games such as scrabble and debating. We encourage sporting activities as a way of promoting a group dynamic. There is a strong emphasis on current affairs, as this enables students to make cross cultural comparisons.
Furthermore, students analyse Bashy Quraishy’s five practical things (Aontas, Creating Intercultural Communities Conference 2008 Report, p.21) to enable respect and acceptance in society: learn the language / accept and respect the law / create good relationships with neighbours / adopt and enjoy the majority culture as best you can / practice your culture and religion peacefully.
