Talent will always shine through, and it certainly shone brightly during this year’s County Dublin VEC Festival of Music in the National Concert Hall, as those who attended witnessed. Of course, the presence of an Uachtaran Micheal D. O hUiginn and his wife, Sabina, as guests of honour illuminated the evening for everyone, but even they would admit that it was the performances from our students which brightened everything and lifted the spirits of all there.
Incredible as it now seems, this event was started fourteen years ago, and has lasted and grown as a direct result of the commitment of the County Dublin VEC teachers involved and also, by the ownership which the students have taken of this festival. This is most clear in December when hundreds of students from County Dublin VEC schools present for audition. Each year it becomes progressively more challenging to select solo and group items for inclusion in the musical programme, owing to the great wealth of talent which presents for audition.
This year was also the first year in which acts from two of County Dublin VEC’s community national schools performed and, in giving those performances in such a polished, confident and professional way, they showed that the future of music in our community is secure!
It would not only be unfair but it would also be impossible to single out which performers stole the show, but I am aware that so many people have great memories of the night, the President and his wife included. They were given a welcome by our students which one normally only associates with pop-stars and celebrities! Indeed Sabina commented that we as a community of teachers, students and parents must be very proud: I believe it is true to say that.. we are!
